Lawn Not Lush And Green? 2 Problems It May Have And Tips To Get The Grass Green Again

by Terri Holmes

If your lawn is not springing back this year, there are one or more things wrong with it. Fortunately, there are ways you can determine what the problem(s) is so that you can get your lawn green again. Below are two of these problems, as well as tips on how you can get your lawn healthy and keep it that way.

Two Lawn Problems

Two common lawn problems include:

Dead Yellow Spots

If you have spots on the lawn that are yellow, and the grass is dead, this is likely due to urine. If a dog, cat, or any other animal urinates on your lawn the uric acid from their urine kills the grass. You also need to do a soil test because if your lawn is high in nitrogen, this will burn the roots of the grass. Dog urine is also high in nitrogen.

Take soil samples from different areas of your grass and take them to the local extension office. You can also purchase soil test kits at a garden center to do the test yourself. If you find problems, you will need to add fertilizer to change the pH of the soil.

Clover

If your lawn has clover, you will see small pink or white flowers that grow low on the ground. Each structure has three round, small leaves and you likely see bees flying around the clover.

If you do not have a lot of clover, you can remove it by hand. If you do have a lot, purchase a weed killer that will kill the weeds but not the grass. Look for this at a garden center. You can also find organic products on the market if you do not want to use chemicals.

A Healthy Lawn

Fertilize your lawn on a regular basis. If the grass is thick, the weeds will have no room to grow.  Do not let the grass get taller than approximately two to three inches. Once it does, you need to mow the grass. Aerating the lawn is also good for grass. This can be done in the spring or in the fall.

Mulching your lawn is another way to keep it lush and green. For a lawn, you can use grass clippings as mulch. Grass clippings are cut into small pieces, so the small pieces of grass drop easily between the blades of grass and directly to the soil. The grass clippings will break down over time and while it is breaking down it is giving nutrients to the soil. To get grass mulch, you can purchase a mulching lawnmower that bags the mulch up as you mow your lawn. You can also purchase bagged grass mulch at garden centers.
