3 Factors To Consider When Designing Your Patio

by Terri Holmes

Outdoor living is important for many reasons. It offers you an extra space, outdoors, to entertain and relax, but it also adds appeal and value to your home. Most experts believe installing a patio will offer you a return on your investment of between 30 and 60 percent. Although the benefits are easy to see, patios can be overwhelming to design. Here are a few key factors to consider when designing your new patio.

1. Sizes

The size of your patio is one of the most important factors to consider. To determine what size you will want and need, focus on how you will use the patio. Many people will have a deck or porch for their main outdoor living area but will include a patio for their grill. In instances such as these, you do not need a very large patio space. However, if your patio will be your main outdoor living area, make sure it is large enough for a dining area, conversational seating, and your grill.

2. Shapes

A patio can be designed in a variety of sizes, but also a wide array of shapes. A square or rectangular are the most common shapes chosen by homeowners and builders because they are usually the easiest to install. The angles and straight edges work well with most styles including homes and landscape designs that are traditional or contemporary.

If you prefer a more fluid look, opt for a rounded patio. A circular patio can become the perfect space for a small bistro set or fire pit. If you need a little extra space, opt for an oval-shaped patio. This longer shape allows you to include more dining and seating area while still maintaining the flowing feel of a circular patio.

3. Materials

Finally, you need to choose a material for your patio. Today, more and more builders and landscapers recommend concrete patios due to their affordability and ease of installation. Unfortunately, the standard concrete slab patio can be a bit ordinary, so many homeowners prefer a different look and material.

To save money, consider using colored concrete or having the concrete slab stamped. Incorporating a bit of color into the concrete will enhance the look of your patio without increasing costs. Stamped concrete can add texture and definition to a standard concrete slab by creating designs that resemble real stone or tile. Natural stone is also an option to consider for your patio. While more expensive than concrete, stone and tile do add enormous appeal and value to your outdoor living space.
